ANTONIO TOSCANI, composer
(Parma, June 27th 1750 - July 3rd 1805)


Priest, studied tambourine, song and counterpoint with Giuseppe Ginocchio.

Recommended by the Count Jacopo Antonio Sanvitale and for their teacher, in the year 1766 went to Bologna to be perfected, for one year, with the father Martini (5 letters of  Toscani to the father they are in the Epistolario Martiniano of Bologna).

April 8th 1767 he presented to the test to be attributed among the partners of the Philharmonic Academy of Bologna and it composed an antiphon to 4 voices Ex Aegipto vocavi (autograph in the file of the academy).

Returned to their homeland, of a libretto of opera of the year 1772 results that it was teacher of clavicémbalo of the School of the Noblemen, news that is even in a libretto of 1882: it was named with the title of "Teacher of Capella to the current service of HRH (His Royal Highness)."

In 1775 he left to Colorno for the enlistment of the cheerful work The colony, what it composed for the Little Theater of the Court, rewarded with 30 zecchini.

On January 22nd 1778 he was named “Teacher of Capella of the Cathedral of Parma”, succeeding to his teacher Giuseppe Ginocchio that it had died: the first executions were April 19th 1778 day of Easter. Great organist, Pelicelli writes that in the biggest solemnities he loved to execute a forced concert of organ, as it happened August 15th 1787 when it inaugurated the Organ of the Duomo of Parma at times of the "Assumption's festivity".  http://mascioni-organs.com/novita/parma.htm

The last function was on April 5th 1805, Easter's festivity.

Up to December 12th 1779, date of the suppression of the chapel, he also was organist to the "Royal Service" in St. Paul's Church but the on the next December 20th were named "Regal Composer of Church's Music” where, in the future, he would receive, that check of liras 2000, enjoyed at the moment by Francesco Poncini. Meanwhile he received 540 liras "annual natural life during" (Paper of provigionati of the 1766).
